Some quick thoughts regarding my photography strategy for Dragon Con this year.
Problem: D*C has banned free standing lights.
Solution: Have friends hold lights.
Problem: From across the room friends holding lights resemble free standing lights.
Solution: Disguise lights inside of costumes.
Problem: People usually find me by looking for my lighting setup.
Solution: Let everyone know what the costumes the lights are disguised as look like.
My plan is to make some UPS costumes in one size fit all brown UPS style shirt for my friends to volunteer as and will my custom softboxes out cardboard boxes. They will be small in size but will be enough to give me just enough extra light to help my photos look interesting.
I will also have two, shall we say, form fitting UPS costumes for MJ and Kristina (think cleavage) to wear that will not have any lighting that they have agreed to wear on the Friday night of the con. They will hang out near my setup to help tip everyone off as to where it is I am shooting because we otherwise would prefer to go relatively unnoticed.
All of this should help me and my crew keep a low profile while complying with all the rules set forth by the powers that be as well as keep us all safe by not having any trip hazards should we have to evacuate the building or if EMS make their way past where we are hanging out.
My current plan is to be somewhere on the Marquis level of the Marriott starting at 6pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. This plan is subject to change and any moment and we may have to move around a little based on traffic flow issues of the convention.
I will update my location as often as possible on my twitter account @bryanhumphrey so please follow me on twitter (at least during the con).
If anyone is interested in stopping by to help me out by posing as a UPS delivery person for 1/2 hour at a time the help is greatly needed and appreciated. Photography for me is all about the light and without lighting assistants I can do what I do.
